I like mermaids as mermaids, but they don't really lend themselves to fic well. Either they have to live under the sea/near the water, or they're 'human' via a spell or something and so - why bother with the mermaid bit?

Unless you can turn the other character into a mermaid or they live in a scuba suit, it just...doesn't work well for me.

But there's nothing *wrong* with them......
