05. [SPOILERS for Yuri on Ice]

Uh I'm pretty sure people that go "I'm into YoI for the figure skating" are like people who go "I read Playboy for the articles"

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's why every time there was a new episode, fans of the show would generate ten paragraph long score analyses, meta and discussion about the performances and scoring and how likely to unlikely it would be in real life. They did all that work just to hide that they were only watching for the pretty boys. That's dedication, man!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably because figure skating and understanding the scores is very niche and anime viewers probably aren't in it for realism.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this secret. I’d be anal retentive about accuracy if it was my sport on the line, even if the boys were very cute.

Figure skating scoring isn't the easiest thing to understand.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the hardest, but it got a lot more complicated after the whole scandal. And given that even expert commentators are sometimes surprised by the scoring, it makes sense that a lot of people wouldn't know everything about it. That said, I would be frustrated by seeing someone scoring more points than were available.

Otabek was robbed. Robbed, I tell you. He should have placed better than JJ given their respective performances. That he didn't really friggin' bugs me, I'm not even joking.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Otabek was introduced too late for me to give a fuck about. But it was really confusing that JJ was implied to have performed so poorly, yet Otabek - who was implied to have performed amazingly well - lost to him.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's how I feel.

I didn't develop any attachment to Otabek, because there was so little of him and he wasn't a focus, but when it shows him as performing really, really well, and JJ as practically crashing and burning ... I just don't understand why JJ got a higher score than Otabek.

That's what bothers me. Especially since while JJ was introduced earlier, they didn't do a single thing to make him likeable. He was the one I wanted to see fail, because he was a bit of a pillock.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, JJ cracked me up, so I enjoyed him. He was such a douche, but mostly good-intentioned - he ribs other skaters, but it seems mostly playful, and he's objectively a nicer guy than, say, Russian Yuri. Making him crash was definitely the best plot choice, though.

The problem about it is though that JJ is still by far the most OP skater. He bombed a performance but he's still on-camera capable of way more than the other skaters. So JJ lost, and while it was interesting in term's of JJ's development, it was still plot convenience that allowed the two protagonists to nab first and second instead even though they are weaker skaters than him.

Otabek was definitely robbed. I remember watching that episode with my friends and we all just looked at each other and were like, "The hell? Why didn't Otabek get a medal?"

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
100% agreed

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm a (somewhat) fan of rl figure skating and I still don't understand how the scoring works. I assume it's largely subjective with certain jumps having an objective base number of points, or whatever. But considering how many people who professionally work in figure skating worked, advised, or choreographed on the anime, I kind of find it hard to believe the writers completely pulled numbers out of their asses.

Also, didn't (Japanese) Yuri's world record sound completely crazy at the time it came out, only for Hanyu Yuzuru to actually beat it at the next competition?

The only thing that really bugged me in the anime was that JJ still got third place after the anime claims he performed so poorly. If his performance's base score (lowest possible score?) was still that high, then how did anyone else like Phichit even stand a chance?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Some things are subjective, but there's still a cap. The thing about Yuri's score is that calculating the highest score he could get with the elements of the program (both GOE and PCS wise) gives a score lower than the one he got.

I think there's some post on tumblr explaining all that in detail? Wish I could remember where I saw it.

At least Yuuri's record it's possible for his program.

I get this. If they were being extreme with the figure skating, like they were flying around the rink and doing like 5 flips in the air, then the scores don't matter because they're obviously not trying to be realistic. But since they're trying to be accurate with the sport, that should extend to the scoring too. That's sorta what I like about anime centred around a sport, you learn about these little niche things.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the JJ thig was a Chenflation reference.

Yuri's score, though. Who knows? It kinda gives weight to the theories that the ending was changed to have room for another season.
They needed Yuri winning, they didn't have time for too many changes and in the end they just increased his score (maybe the record thing was intended from the beginning tho), because it's not like most people really get the scoring system and they just needed him to get gold...

Or maybe not. But I've a hard time believing they'd work so hard trying to be realistic about the sport (hiring Kenji for the choreographies, visiting the real rink for references, etc,) just to throw an impossible score at the end.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, Chenflation. He's a beautiful skater, but I'm so happy I'll never have to see him compete again.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Given that there are a ton of RL competitive skaters who love the show and don’t have a problem with the scoring, I see no issues. Plus the creators are super fans of the sport as well so they knew what they were doing. It’s creative license, not stupidity.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, one of the things keeping me from starting this anime is the fact that I'm already a figure skating fan. I mean, normally when I'm watching sports anime, it's what gets me into watching the sport professionally (tennis, volleyball, basketball) or it's not a sport I'm otherwise interested in (American football). Already being interested? Is just too weird (don't even know what I'd do if they made a hockey anime, god).

I'm so confused already. Aren't single jumps not even counted as elements?
