Man with how much untrained magical shit these Heralds have running around, it's astonishing that Valdemar isn't just a giant smoking crater in the ground before Elspeth brings magical knowledge back. Ancar who? Just let them blow themselves up.

Weren't all the Herald trainees magical emo kids? I thought that was a requirement.

Haha, sort of but Talia is an official magical emo kid... her Gift is empathy, which includes projective empathy - if she can't or doesn't shield herself, whatever she feels affects all the people around her. So there's at least one point in the book where she feels so terrible and worthless to the point of being suicidal and she nearly drives her partner insane.
