Well

I strongly disagree but as long as everyone's having a good time

Not OP, but what part of the secret do you strongly disagree with? Is this a thing where you see one or more of the presented ships as non-platonic and disagree with OP's preference for seeing it platonically? Or do you just disagree with the concept of platonic friendshipping in general?

I love platonic friendships, and I feel shipping has overshadowed that massively :/

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I've stopped caring though that fans always want best friends in a story to fuck in fan fiction but it did depress me as a teen.

I hate it when it becomes difficult to discuss canon because shippers conflate their ships and canon.

I had someone describe a friendship as 'platonic [shipping name]' the other day and almost swallowed my tongue. I think there's something deeply wrong in fandom when people can only couch things in shipping terms even when they're talking about non-shipping things.

IA. I spent all afternoon looking for gen!fic for a recently-released movie and can't find anything that isn't shipping. :(

Helped in the case of the Mummy by the fact that Rick/Evie is one of my honest-to-god favourite ships of all time, canon or otherwise. Sorry Ardeth, my lovely, as gorgeous as you are, I just really love those two together.

(The Carnahan siblings are also one of my favourite sibling relationships in anything ever. The whole main foursome is a thing of beauty. This is how a movie has fun with people who genuinely enjoy being in each other's vicinity, even if there's a bit of a whoopsie-daisy with the apocalypse going on at the same time)

To this entire comment. Like I can see why people would be into Ardeth/Rick totally, but my heart is so taken by Rick/Evie I've never felt the pull for it. And as you said all the relationships in this movie are fantastic and Evie+Jonathan are alone of my favourite sibling duos as well.

I love intense platonic friendships too and I have a tricky time finding fics for them.

I'm with you there, bud.

(I mean, I ship romances as well, but passionate platonic friendships fill an emotional need for me.)

You and the OP of The Road to El Dorado secret should become friends.

I'm a very ship-happy person but I love friendships too, and even if I ship a strictly platonic relationship in a canon as romantic in fandom I still love the canon friendship for what it is. After all my enjoyment of the relationship is why I think they could work together.

But I also ship a medley of canon and non-canon ships, it all depends on if the dynamic pings for me and I've got no issue of people not being into a non-canon ship of mine because they prefer it as a friendship.

Exactly this.
