I also didn't really like his first appearance. I felt like they went in too hard with the "he's the reflection of The Tenth Doctor!" stuff and also he wasn't helped by the fact that I cringe just thinking about the Dobby!Doctor thing, so by extension my opinion of The Master suffers.

In the Christmas ones (Ten's finale) I tolerated him a lot better but I still found him a bit "I'm SO CRAZY!" in a way that rubbed me the wrong way. What's weird is that I loved Missy's whole act and she's probably even more guilty of being hammier than a hamper full of hams. John Simm was really toned down (relatively speaking) in his latest appearance and it's the first time I haven't had mixed feelings.

So I guess I broadly agree with you and know how it feels. I'd say it's ok to change your mind on a character in either direction and not particularly care for a specific interpretation. Especially when dealing with different writers and directors. People do it all the time in many of my fandoms. Sometimes the character just doesn't do it for you and then suddenly they do.
