I liked Groot a lot in the original movie, but making him into a tiny, "cute" mascot character was a big mistake, imo.

I agree. I thought that adult Groot was a hell of a lot more likable than the 'cute mascot' Groot. I guess Marvel thought that they needed to give GotG something to use to market toys/merch that would appeal to little kids. GotG just isn't as easy for them to sell crap to the single-digit age crowd as Captain America or Iron Man.

I find him cute and like his 'I am Groot's'(especially in that scene in IW), but he's not you cup of tea which is cool and I'm sorry it annoys you because that must make watching GOTG movies pretty intolerable.

Agreed, Groot is somewhere between boring and annoying. The only "cute" thing about him isn't him, but rather the way the raccoon acts toward him.

BB8 was also annoying as fuck and did not care about it at all.

BB8 is cute. It would be handy to have one of those, fix shit, keep the car running, do the household chore, get into tight spaces, without the babble of a protocol droid. Not too much personality like an r2 droid.

Groot has been totally different in every movie he appears in, so if you don’t like something, I’m sure they’ll have a different flavor by the time he returns from nonexistence.

I liked tiny Groot when he was in the background, but as a foreground character his scenes were terrible. Like the unnecessary dance sequence just went on way too long, and his selective understanding of language wasn't cute, it was just frustrating because you just know that at the most important moment he'll magically do the right thing. As a background character though, asking for hugs while other characters are talking, getting passed around and being shown that everyone is comfortable with him, yawning in the back while other characters are figuring things out--the small details they added to tiny Groot are almost worth having to watch the annoying "joke" scenes. Almost.
