139. The thing about Whedon is that he's not about the plot, he's about the characters. Because admittedly, his plots are nothing special and it's not full of great twists and surprises. I mean, they're good plots, but they're not outstanding and they're not what defines his work. It is, however, full of great characters and that's why I personally don't mind the predictable character deaths. The deaths and tragedies open up some fantastic doors to character development and I have to say, Whedon has done some of the best character arcs I've seen (see: Wesley).

But Whedon is Whedon, and his M.O. is geared towards a specific audience mindset, I find. You either love him or hate him/don't get what the buzz is all about.

Also, if you're over 30 and female? You're deader'n' dogshit in the Jossverse. And I know thaat's true of a lot of shows, granted, but all those other shows aren't seen as feminist or progressive or boundary pushing. And I say this as someone who has every season of Buffy on DVD. It's just... I know what I'm watching.

Not true in Firefly (I'm pretty sure Zoe is supposed to be in her 30's; the actress was/is - and it's strongly suggested that Inara is too), although I certainly agree this is the case in the Buffyverse.
