Old Kingdom is like, my favorite fictional world ever.

TRUE STORY: I went to a Harry Potter midnight release party and tried to buy Across the Wall instead.

They wouldn't let me.

What. Um. Way to turn down a paying customer, store-in-question. o.O That's like, seven brands of stupid.

I KNOW. D: Maybe they were afraid of better books. It is a mystery.

Why wouldn't they let you? I went to midnight releases and bought other books.

Old Kingdom rocks, btw.

No, I think they just had an HP assembly line or something. Who knows, it was just against store policy. I went back the next morning and bought my Old Kingdom book.

Lame.

I did my final art project on Sabriel in your icon!!!!!! And if I say so myself, it fucking rocked.

That't awesome. I'm never allowed to be that cool on school projects. This could be because my thesis statements would soon turn into "FUCK YEAH, ZOMBIES" but I don't think that's such a bad thing.

Ok, did you like Across the Wall? I expected more, and was consequently a bit disappointed. :(

Okay, so basically I am a HUGE NICK FAN, which is weird, but I was really looking forward to seeing him do stuff when not mind-controlled by a hunk of metal, so on that front it didn't disappoint, but it set up all kinds of questions and then didn't answer them. C'mon, 200 more pages!! YOU CAN DO IT GARTH NIX I KNOW YOU CAN.

:D I love Nick as well! Yeah, that was the best part, but it did leave so much lacking, and wasn't really like a book book, which would have been 23498239487298347293874 times better.

Just from this conversation I've realized I have a thing for hot men brainwashed for evil. WTF, SELF?

But yeah, I really want further sequel adventures so bad. Sam can discover his Wallmaker inheritance!! Nick has freaky free magic powers that haven't been explained! Mogget...can be snarky! And a cat!! LIRAEL: HER HAND IS MADE OF GOOOLD.

Top this off with lack of decent fanfic and I am a sad panda.

Sorry, I've totally been stalking this conversation, but it's always good to find more Abhorsen series fans. I mean, seriously, where's the fandom? With a trilogy this good, you'd think it would be a little more active. >.>

And yeah... I'm with you on the evil brainwashed guys. I <3 Nick (and Kain, too, really). Poor guy. I'm glad he was featured more in Across the Wall. It was good to see him when he wasn't, you know, possessed by an ancient cosmic horror or acting like a know-it-all.

It's true! And I find a lot of people who've read and liked it, but when I do write for it or make icons there's nowhere to really put my work.

It was really neat to see Ancelstierre, too, I think. I'm pretty fascinated by the duality of Nix's world. Because it allows for a thirties-style espionage story coupled with zombies and magic and yep that's like a ticky-box list of awesome. Definitely especially nice to see him competent, which he really was before, but most of the fanfic I did track down did not really seem to understand this. Uhhh, the reason he didn't believe in magic is because Orannis was posessing him? He was completely with it in the scene after the cricket game, where we were first introduced to him and Sam.

Is there even an Abhorsen series-centric community here at LJ? It seems like all the comms are for Garth Nix books in general, and it's like that at FF.net, too.

Ancelstierre seemed a little steampunk-ish to me, for some reason. I'm not sure how, but that was definitely the image that got stuck in my head. I mean, it's an awesome image and I wish I could do something with that, but that's probably not what Nix was going for. I loved how juxtaposed Ancelstierre and the Old Kingdom are, especially at the Wall where everything merges to try to get the best of both worlds in order to survive.

People write Nick like he's incompetent? Wha? Did they not notice how resourceful he was when trying to do everything in his power to fight off Orannis's influence or when Nick actually held him off long enough to try to implement his own plan to stop the hemispheres from merging? That just boggles my mind.

SNES FF is my main fandom, sooo, yeah.

There are a few, I think, but none of them are remotely active. I consider trying to start one up every now and then but I don't really know how to go about it.

I just take Ancelstierre as England circa 1930. :/ I don't know how intentional that was, either, but that's how I've always treated it. The perimeter guard are awesome, I love it when they turn up. \0/

Uh, yeah, I don't get it either. Normally in post-Abhorsen fic Nick's like, "Gee, old chum, I guess magic really does exist by golly." I dunno, I thought the major contrast was between Nick who is much more a traditional hero figure and a natural leader, versus Sam and Lirael who are outcasts and unsure of themselves. The fact that Nick was subverted early on is significant, but it doesn't make him an idiot.

OH MY GOODNESS I love Nick. I couldn't say exactly why, but I am such a fan...I dunno, Lirael reminds me of myself a little so maybe I like him more because of the pairing? But anyway, awesome that this one secret started such a long chain of Old Kingdom discussion...we need a community! Or just more good fic and a few amazing movies.

Oh, I think he's really easy to relate to (in a different way than Lirael's easy to relate to) because he reacts like I think a normal person would to all these fanciful tales of magic. I ship Nick/Lirael hardcore too, so that might be affecting me here. I'm definitely trying to write more for the fandom, so. Maybe I will make a community.
