That was the POINT.

This wasn't a TV show or a movie, this is a beginning, this is an origin story. We are only supposed to care about Penny because Dr Horrible cares. Yes, she got fridge'd, but that's what she was there for. That is the archetype she was supposed to fit. It wouldn't have made sense for her not to die.

I don't mind her being killed off as much as I mind her being a vague, one-sided personality. I'm a little annoyed that Joss calls himself a feminist and then pulls this act with Penny. It is an origin story and Billy is the star, but that doesn't mean I can't expect more from one of my favorite writers.

Okay. Four characters in the entire thing. ONE OF THEM was anything beyond one-dimensional. Dr. Horrible is not a sexist thing. Penny was not fridged.

That's... sort of the point of the "fridging" complaint. That the only female character exists solely to die and further Horrible's plot.

Do you not understand what fridging means? It's not just about summarily killing off "a character".

Yes, I know what WIR is.

Dr Horrible was a bit meta, yeah? Penny was the epitome of a WIR. That's her character discription. Just as Captain Hammer may as well be called 'Superdickery' and the Fan Trio are the stereotypical batshit rabid fanbrats. Dr Horrible is the only character with a real personality, and it's meant to be that way.

I'm sure Joss KNEW he was writing a WIR, and meant to do it. THAT is what I was saying.

If it was meant to be satire, from what I heard it was bad satire. The sort of satire that doesn't manage to surpass the original limitations of the thing it's supposedly lampooning. Clearly you disagree, but I don't want to raise my blood pressure when I barely trust someone like Gail Simone to do something like that without making me upset, much less a writer I barely trust to keep characterization consistent, like Whedon.
