I can barely articulate how offended I am by the simile you chose to use. And I'm rarely offended by something I saw on the internet, but that is truly awful and wrong.

Ha. Well, to be honest, I have had plenty of thought-provoking discussions with friends on LJ, but... I guess when it comes to being "witty" in fandom, there is no such thing as crossing the line.

It is comforting to know I'm not the only one who was appalled by that secret, though.

Oh, you're so smart. I'm aware of how fortunate I am. Does that make my feelings any less validated?! The fact that I, and the person who made that secret, do not live in such unthinkable conditions is all the more reason why his/her words should not be seen as harmless and amusing. It is, in fact, disgusting. He or she should have picked a different simile. It's not funny. Period.

Do you find the Spanish Inquisition sketch offensive? Do you react this way every single time anyone makes a reference to Nazis in a slightly less than serious way? Or to weather phenomena that have been known to kill people? Because if you don't, then you're kind of a hypocrite.

No, "they" don't have a point because I lived through September 11th and presumably so did everyone reading this community, because I hope to god no one under the age of 7 is on LiveJournal. And I fucking live in New York. I've never seen that sketch and I don't see how it's relevant, sorry. Everyone is hypocritical to a degree, so I don't see how that's relevant either. It doesn't change my feelings and I'm not sure why you keep questioning them, but I am sick of repeating myself over and over again.

Your logic blows. You can argue this until you're blue in the face but the simple fact is that the amount of time that has elapsed does matter. Perhaps it shouldn't. Perhaps the Spanish Inquisition sketch SHOULD be offensive.

But, first off, let us consider the Spanish Inquisition sketch in and of itself. The people who are negatively portrayed are the Inquisition themselves. They're idiots. That's the joke. They're fanatical morons. Which is pretty much what the Spanish Inquisition is historically thought of as.

All that notwithstanding, as I said, it DOES matter how long it has been. You can't pretend that the amount of time that has elapsed between an incident and a joke about it doesn't matter, because it does. Hundreds of years, even decades, and so forth, and so forth. Again, perhaps we shouldn't be glib about them, but I don't really know of anyone who remembers when their parents were tortured by the Spanish Inquisition.

Similarly, even though yeah, I do know a LOT of people who were affected by Nazis within memory, but also consider that the nature of most Nazi jokes colors them in a negative light. That matters.

Also, one of the first rules of arguing on the internet (Godwin's Law...it has a name) states that the person who brings up Nazis first is automatically the loser. QED...
