I haven't read this book, but it's probably not the best idea to learn about a culture through novels written by someone that isn't part of that culture. Too often,the authors just pick and choose the parts they like and don't bother with research.

Also, it's not necessary to appreciate or respect every culture. Some just aren't good; plain and simple. The culture in my birth country is one of them and I've done everything to distance myself from it.
