I used to post on a site that didn’t distinguish between hits from users and hits from any kind of bot or automated process. For instance, every time a story showed up in a Google search result, it counted as a hit, even if the searcher never clicked the story. It was pretty disappointing to realize how inflated those hit counts really were.

Google used to index links based on how "trusted" they were. In short, if the link showed up a lot (like a bunch of people rec'ing a fic in different places) then it would get more hits on google and move up the search chain because Google's AI assumed it was a "good" link. If you got a bunch of hits from Google, then your fics were being talked about.
