New Laptop Recs

(Anonymous) 2018-05-31 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So mine is dying, and I have nooooo idea what to get to replace it. Used mostly for writing, internet, and videos/music. Not a big gamer so it doesn't need to run the latest big name games.

I'm happy with my Macbook Pro. I don't have the Airbook or the Pro with all the latest stuff. Because I still want a harddrive because what I need it for is videos/music/internet/writing and for storing things. It works well for what I need.

Yeah my dying laptop is a 2008 (I think?) Macbook, and I was looking at the Pro because the max HD on the Air was like, 128?

Yup, Apple is trying to do away with the harddrive, so you have to go to older models to get a harddrive that is decent. My Pro has a 1TB harddrive, though. I need it. Had to pay a bit extra, but worth it.

.....the new ones don't have hard drives? They use the chromebook method (not that they have a monopoly on that but)

I'm still using my 2013 macbook air and have no intention of replacing it.

At least some of their computers run on basically the same thing as flashdrives. So not a hard drive. And a lot less space.

Oh, absolutely not. I had to get an ext. HD because I used almost all my space, and getting a 1k+ machine again with a lot less? no.

This is how I feel. I already have a 2TB portable hard drive as well. I have a shit ton of music and a lot of videos as well. And probably as many as 5000 ebooks which take some space. Storage space and memory are the two things I need most. Other things I don't care about.

I just got a kind of standard Dell laptop, Dell Inspiron, I think it was about 200 bucks. Works great, travels well, not too heavy or too hot, good battery.

Yeah I think if I had to prioritize it'd be storage+battery life and then processing speed.

A laptop or phone with a super-short battery life is just - arrgh. So annoying.

I got a Thinkpad T570 about 4 months ago. It's very satisfactory - great build quality and extremely solid performance. I think it cost me about $800 on sale but it's exactly what I'm looking for. It might be a little more powerful than you need though, IDK.

Generally, I would recommend either Lenovo or Asus as the 2 best companies if you're looking for a PC. Acer might be OK as well for a budget machine.

Damn I just googled the Thinkpad T570 and it was all, "This laptop is no longer available." There's a T580 though with really decent specs.
