Hard scifi isn't in any way fantasy. Fantasy involves magic, the supernatural, or the fantastical in some way. There is plenty of scifi that doesn't. Scifi is about the future or technology or speculative stuff in some way. There is a ton of overlap, but not all scifi fits into the fantasy genre.

yeah but lots of sci fi DOES fit into the fantasy genre. by picking fantasy you get most sci fi, including all the space-themed sci fi where people run into aliens and THEY have magic even if the humans don't

so it's not a true either/or to me in the same way that no pcs are macs, no macs are pcs

Get

out.

Sci-fi has works of actual literary merit. Hell Philip K Dick alone has written more novels of actual substance then anything ever produced in the fantasy genre.

Are you serious? Nope. Lots of scifi has merit. Lots of fantasy does too. I'd take anything by Tolkien over anything by Dick any day of the week.
