I think the OP might be missing the point of Sledge Hammer.

The whole POINT was that he shouldn't have a gun. Or a badge. Or a job, come to think of it.

I mean, the first season ended with him nuking an entire city because of his incompetence.

I mean, I get hating excessive gun violence (I'll be honest, any violence porn is a guarantee to make me run screaming away). I'm dubious about the idea that Sledge Hammer falls into that realm.

But IA on Get Smart. It's very much a product of its time. That's why I much prefer the 2008 movie with Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway.
