who... are we talking about here

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
All of them ever AFAIK

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
really?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I stopped listening to rap around 2002, but anything before that, yeah. I can't think of a single one that doesn't make pop culture references or in-jokes. I would say it's fundamental to the genre.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I agree that pop culture references and in-jokes are part of the genre

I just don't think it's anywhere near as important as OP is saying? Like, yeah, it's there, but I never felt like it was the point of most songs. There are definitely some rappers who overuse it but I really just don't understand where OP is coming from on the whole.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't read the secret as OP thinking it's the "point" of the songs, but I also don't care enough to argue OP's intent.

I'm just confused about who OP has in mind as being part of "a dumbass circlejerk over who can cleverly insert, by which I mean shoehorn, the most rhyming in-jokes into a song and feel the smartest for 'getting' all this extremely current pop culture shit"

That's literally all I'm asking here, it just didn't really ring true to me so I asked who OP was talking about

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you getting at, then?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not getting at anything! I just don't really get where OP's coming from - it's just not been my experience that, with most rap, it's primarily about shoehorning references into a song

(Anonymous) 2018-06-02 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not rap, but Ready Player One is a media property in the same sort of vein as the secret. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMBylNJQEbg

Huh.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess a lot of the rap I've listened to has had a fair amount, because, while I know there's other stuff out there, the ones that immediately come to mind sure do have those topical references. It probably has gotten worse, but I also feel like people are more aware of what's going on and that contributes to it, both for the performer and the listener.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-02 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it gets annoying.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-02 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of get what you mean. There's a lot of pressure to "stay relevant" in the genre. It's practically a given that any artist will reference current events or current pop culture because it makes them sound fresh and hip and in the know. Lots of lazy ones especially amateur/underground substitute references for meaning.

On the other hand they're shooting themselves in the foot a bit by doing so. I've never went back and listened to classics from the 80s or 90s and been like "ah yes, this political reference about a minor scandal that happened when I was five, I understand the meaning of this line." So the more they do it and the more niche they get, the faster their lyrics will become irrelevant.

Lots of bad comedians substitute references for humor too.
