Thing is, it's more than just some people using faux moralising and pearl clutching as a disguise for their ship hate. It's people actually harrassing and harming other because of their ship hate and try to justify it with some kind of moral high ground.
And that's just creepy.

I do this too. Sheith looks like a ship I'd totally be into but I've steered clear of watching the show and getting into the fandom just because of the insane amount of toxicity going on in it. I don't need that in my life, I'm lucky enough for the first time that both of my biggest current fandoms are relatively sane shipping wise. (There's some mild drama surrounding Genyatta but it's not a big enough ship for people to dive too deeply into shipping respectability politics surrounding it and beyond a couple "Zenyatta is a monk so he must be asexual and if you write him having sex ur a big old aphobic bigot" crazies it's quiet for the most part.)


Voltron fandom by contrast just seems like a giant feces bomb. If the worst I have to endure is a few whiny assholes pissed I like writing about Zenyatta getting his robopussy destroyed, I'll take it compared to the absolute life-destroying hurricanes that happen in Voltron fandom.

I haven't kept up with the newest season drama, I'm taking it that nothing has really calmed down?

I feel the need to clarify that I meant destroyed figuratively, not literally. I shouldn't have used that as a term lol. I assume most people know I'm using the euphemism here but with robots and cyborgs there are some people who have a kink for actual 100% literal "break me" porn. That's not my jam. (Though as long as it's properly tagged so I can avoid it, have fun if it's yours!)

(Slightly off-topic, but I'm like 90% sure I've read your Genyatta fic, to which I say "thank you." I've commented on a few fics in that vein, but if yours wasn't one of them I really appreciate the work you're doing. XD )

Lol, I'm not sure if it's one of mine or not but either way I'm just so glad to hear that people are into Zenyatta getting plowed because I've got a few rough drafts involving that that I've been writing off and on. Not that I don't love Zenyatta giving it to Genji, but at times it feels like that's like 99% of what's out there and Zenyatta is too cute not to take it often and enthusiastically!

I know Lance as a character straight up annoys the PISS out of me, I honestly have never held such a powerful hate boner for any character before him. I hate his fucking voice, I hate his personality, I hate his five-head... like. He just. Ugh. I can't ship him with anyone. And it's just so fucking random?? It doesn't make sense that I have such a visceral reaction to him, because, really, he's a fairly harmless, stereotypical character.

While I don't hate Lance, I'm just honestly baffled that he's such a fan favorite. Why? Does he appeal to the younger crowd, is that it?

He's a comic relief type of character and he's ambiguously brown but not too brown. So that's two reasons.

Honestly, same. Lance is probably one of my least favorite characters in general, and that dislike only continued to build up the more his stans started to hype him up. And ship him with everyone. And drone on and on about how "relatable" he is, which just makes me think that I would never want to relate to his class-clown ass, or even be friends with someone like him!

But it's completely irrational, so I rarely ever talk about it. I really don't want to talk about it to other Voltron fans especially, because I don't want to offend or put anybody off just because I unreasonably hate a character they might like. It's just frustrating, because I liked Lance in the original Voltron! :(

I poked my nose into this fandom very briefly, saw the mess it was and then left.

I like some of the ships and I sometimes go into the edit tags to reblog some gifsets but that's as far as I go, I don't consider it worth the hassle and otherwise just watch the show without bothering with the fandom. Which works nicely for me tbh.

I don't know anything about Voltron, but I did stumble across a post of it on Tumblr once, going on and on about how one of the ships is "total pedophilia", and my first instinct was to laugh and assume they were probably talking about characters who were like, 17 & 18 or some kind of overreaction like that.

The fact that these people are solely responsible for desensitizing me to claims of pedophilia is probably not a good thing, yet here we are.
