Re: What have been some of your worst car experiences?

When I was in my late teens, my family was planning to move from Iowa to Vermont, 'cause my dad had a job offer out there. We were riding in an old two-door car, crammed in with whatever smaller stuff we could take with us (didn't have the money for a U-haul at the time, had planned to come back at a later date to grab the rest of our stuff), so that was tough enough.

When we were in Ohio, apparently our car decided to give out on us and the engine started smoking and eventually there were some flames coming up from the front of the car. The upside is that we just so happened to break down right along a busy road in a town, and some other motorists/passerby apparently saw the smoke coming from our car and called the fire department, who, also luckily, happened to be right down the street. So thankfully they were able to put out the flames before things got any worse, and our stuff inside the car wasn't affected.

Still, it was a pretty scary experience, and it left us without any transportation, so we had to find a way to sort all of that out going forward.. And watching the firefighters try to help us get all the stuff we'd crammed into our car out of there, like it was a clown car or something, was kind of hilarious and embarrassing all at the same time, too.

*The issue with the car was probably a sign the move wasn't meant to be, too, 'cause that Vermont job offer fell through not long after.

My family's always had issues with our cars, though-we've had a lot of older, used ones, and they've always had some kind of trouble. Windows that won't properly roll up or down, having to park it a certain way 'cause it risks rolling if we park it any other, paint chips falling off the car, stuff like that. Our experience with cars is why the only thing I care about in relation to them is, "Does it actually run okay and can it get me safely from point A to point B? Yes? Then we're good." :p.
