It's not really that they can't write, it's that the story they're telling is not best suited for prose, that's all.

I've been futzing with a story for ten years and it only recently occurred to me that it would be better as a TV show than a novel.

I remember I listened to a playlist of music for a fic and ended up hating the story just based on the playlist. I didn't even read the story because the playlist was so annoying.

I guess I sort of agree.

If the visual or music references are incidental, meant to enhance, not to define, that's fine, but if they are deemed necessary to your understanding of the story, then no. There is an exception, though - if the story was written in response to a pic prompt or song prompt, the pic or song is kind of important to the story.

I was reading a story not too long ago that literally did this, and it was so fucking bad. I would say 'He went into the 'woods' for a walk' and 'woods' was a link to some image or other.

They did this *constantly*, for everything. 'town', 'hotel', 'jacket'. Just - fucking hell.

As predicted, it sucked. I'm with you, OP.

ETA: I *do* link some things in authors notes. Things I think a lot of people might not have experience with, or if i referenced something really interesting or amazing, like a natural feature or building or historical event. But not in the body of the fic itself, ever.

But what are your thoughts on visual novels?

(Not entirely joking.)

Yeah, I can see this. If someone just suggests listening to a particular song, then sure. But if you really have to, that's when I get suspicious.

I've done this. I'll link to a song that I listened to a lot during the writing, but I'll list it as recommended music. Anything else just seems... weird at best, sketchy as fuck at worst.

The only time I'll give this a pass is if the piece is a) in text, and b) not completely fucking ubiquitous. So if you say the string quartet is practising Shostakovitch's string quartet #15, and you hyperlink to a recording, that's fine. If you embed a video of Ed Sheeran performing Perfect because that's what Sasuke's gonna sing to Naruto this chapter, or just because it's the perfect soundtrack to them boning, I'm leaving.

Thank goodness, I did the former in a fic once when the characters were dancing to a particular, not-very-common style of music and I was lowkey panicking bc the rest of this thread seems to be v down on it :/
