Re: How long should you live somewhere before deciding to buy a house?
(Anonymous) 2018-06-05 01:13 am (UTC)(link)People often say "Oh renting is throwing money down the drain!" but a mortgage in my area would be at minimum three times my rent, plus all the utilities, upkeep, property maintenance and taxes, etc.
And in this day and age, unless you buy the house flat out, it's not really an asset if you're paying $3k a month towards a mortgage vs paying $1k a month in rent and putting that other $2k in savings.
That said, if it's something you can afford and want to do, take things into account:
1. Where do you work? Is this likely to change?
2. Do you plan on having kids? What are schools like in the area if you are?
3. How safe do you feel in the neighbourhood? Not just for you, but potential kidlets.
4. Is it close to all the right things for you? Hospitals, grocers, etc.
5. What are the people like?
6. Is it an area that's gentrifying, or losing value? Don't put $600k into a house that if you decide to move, you're going to only get $500k back from.
Basically just think about your wants/needs and whether this place meets them. I think it's more that than 'I've lived here six years so I guess I'll stay.'
