A couple of things to consider: Do your wife's employee benefits include an Employee Assistance Program? (Many employers do, but they tend not to be widely advertised.) If so, she might have access to free, confidential mental health assistance of some kind (counseling sessions, etc.). She might also qualify for disability. Also, does she qualify for FMLA? If so, and she goes through the appropriate HR channels, it gets a lot harder for the company to fire her.

It doesn't cost you anything, and the agencies only make money off you if they hire you out, so they're highly incentivized to find you a job.
