My cat Maxwell (as seen in my icon here) died last night. He was diabetic and had a rodent ulcer on his upper lip that didn't want to go away no matter what treatment it got, and two weeks ago he developed an upper respiratory infection as well. We took him to the vet early last week, and he was given an antibiotic shot that ended up making him much, much worse. He went from active but clearly a little under the weather to lethargic and unable to eat or drink at all. We had to give him food and water via syringe the whole week, and he would cry in pain for several minutes after every dosage. The vet said to just give it a few days for the antibiotic to work, but it never did. Instead, on Wednesday he began crying in pain at random points throughout the day, even when he hadn't just been fed. I had leftover feline pain medication from previous cat surgeries, so I gave him the recommended dosage of it as often as I was allowed, but it never seemed to help. I wanted to take him back to the vet ASAP, but right now my family is in a bad way financially and we couldn't afford to do it (the vet clinics in this area don't really do payment plans and we used up the last of our care credit months ago), so I tried to fund-raise online to get him there, but didn't make enough to do it before the weekend. By Saturday it was obvious that he wasn't going to make it, and so I just focused on trying to make him comfortable, but I failed at that, too. He died in pain and I hate myself for not being able to do anything about it. I keep telling myself that he's not hurting anymore, that it's better that he died at home where he felt safe and loved rather than the vet's clinic that always terrified him, but it's cold comfort, to say the least.

I just can't believe I lost Max and Sharif in the same year. Two of the most wonderful, beautiful animals I've ever known, and they both suffered horribly and undeservedly and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't ease their pain.

(Hugs). I’m so sorry for him and for you. You gave a diabetic cat a loving home, something not everyone would do, and it sounds like taking him to the vet would’ve been a stressful trial for him anyway. (hugs again)

I'm so sorry.

At the best of times it's just awful when they go. I too feel that I let my pets down by not having them put down sooner. They suffered, even only for a few hours until the vet opened again, and I hate myself for it. I'll never forgive myself for that and I won't have another pet for that reason.

We gave them all the love in the world while they were alive and somehow it doesn't seem quite enough.

Warmest hugs to you. Sometimes we just get it wrong.

You did enough. He was surrounded by love in the end, and that means a lot to anyone, animals included. Cats know when you're trying. So please, stop beating yourself up. You did all you could, and you did all that for the him. And he knew.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing an animal is the worst. I'm sure he had a happy life and was loved and spoiled as all pets should be. And he knew you loved him and were trying your best and doing what you could for him. He was with the one who loved him when he died, and that is an amazing thing you did for him. All the hugs and thoughts for you. Let us know if you need anything.
