116. This show made me feel better about completing all my credits, meaning that this Fall I'll be graduating. With a B.A. in English.

130. Smut is where an otherwise great piece of fiction can become quite repetitive. Maybe because it’s the point where many Yaoi authors begin writing about an activity they themselves have never experienced, and are thus more likely to borrow from other fictional depictions? But this is also a problem with fiction depicting heterosexual relationships, as well. Smut is oftentimes fairly repetitive, which makes it boring. Of course, there is great smut out there as well.

Still, 9 times out of 10 I’m scrolling down going, “Uh huh, uh huh, but who is the Masked Fedora and how is his secret identity related to the failure of Protocol GHI – B?”

133. Maybe… maybe they’re meant to look pretty horrid? Like they’re made by the bad doctor’s fan-minions?

The secret talked about manga/anime - and IMO the reason is that a) most of the readers are more interested in smut than plot, and b) because of a) this is what BL publishers are focusing on (see magazines featuring basically nothing but one-shot BL pr0n). This is what the readers want, this is what the readers get. Also, BL was never meant to be realistic (which is something many people fail to understand). It's just fantasy by women for women. That's why it doesn't matter whether a mangaka has ever experienced what she's writing about or not. That's simply not the point.

130. You're right; Yaoi, after all, gets its name from "no plot, no point," or something like that. However, I think plot actually has a huge impact on the romance or sex of the story, and plot/smut cannot be so easily separated. While realism is not necessary for the enjoyment of a story (Why, hello, Mr. Talking Penis! Yes, that is an adorable hat!), repetitive writing can have a negative impact on the experience. I think it draws attention in fiction to what it is: fiction. Personally I find (whether it's in sex scenes or action scenes that include "If you hurt a hair on her head") that when I come across something that blatantly recalls clichés, I begin to be pulled from the story. I see the woman behind the curtain.

I'm no longer watching angels having celestial foreplay (Milton would love it) or werebeasts doing a big hairy nasty (not realistic, but a fun manga!) but am instead suddenly intimately aware that I am reading a piece of fiction. These aren't real people, but lines on the page. Which has always been true, but it's also the job of a writer to try to trick you otherwise for as long as possible. Even when you're writing smut, since, as you pointed out, fantasy is part of the point.

Ah, I agree that plot is important - I'm just saying that apparently not everyone thinks so. Many people seem to be in it for the pr0n, which in turn influences the industry. Tastes differ, etc, not everyone expects long, complex stories, especially in this genre which, by its nature, is not supposed to be long and complex. (Which doesn't mean there are no long, complex BL stories out there, or even shorter ones with very little to no sex, of course. There are quite a few, but you often need to look behind what's very popular at the moment.)

Me, I'm in the "whatever floats your boat" camp as far as such things are concerned, and even if sometimes my boat happens to be picked up by an unlikely current, I'm not inclined to analyze the reasons. ^^;; Though I've always been in it for the fanworks, mostly...
