127. The thing about Iron Man, unlike most of the superhero movies recently, is that it doesn't have a protagonist who reforms and Learns a Lesson completely. He's still a dick, he's just...a dick in the right direction.

That's true. I was thinking more in terms of the authorial voice, for want of a better word. There was so much 'lol ev0l A-rabs' stuff in the first part of the movie that wasn't completely cancelled out by the second part, I felt. I liked the revelation that the biggest bad guy was a white American arms dealer but that part of the movie felt much weaker to me than the first part.

I actually like that Stark doesn't change completely. His Republican cognitive dissonance (as someone else called it) is quite funny and interesting to watch. I just feel that the more problematic parts of the movie are overlooked (gender issues ahoy :\ ).

Anyway, I'd tl;dr'd too much about this and it's late over here. Thanks for responding!

127. If you go into it and ignore the fact that Stark isn't really supposed to be a moral paragon in the first place you might get that idea, and I'm sure some people did.

The gender issues are, again, a Tony Stark thing. He's canonically a womanizing, alcoholic, too smart for his own good cooperation head, and unlike Bruce Wayne he's not putting on an act.

Fair enough. I've read quite a few reviews and this seems to be a YMMV thing. Everyone has a different take on the movie. It doesn't help that I'm Muslim with a Middle-Eastern heritage - I spent a fair amount of time going D:

Gender stuff - It wasn't the womanising parts, I did get that it was part of the character, there were other things that bothered me. But I already said I was going to sleep and now I mean it. Thanks for the chat!

Aw, thanks! I could easily talk all day about this as I love disecting movies. I did want to add one thing that actually another poster said: Tony Stark's turning point comes when he realises that his weapons kills Americans, not people in general. Now, I can understand that in the beginning because everyone finds it easier to relate to someone who's like them. The problem is that it isn't then explicitly stated that he thinks non-Americans are people too. He did save the refugees but it would have been nice to have seen him say "hey, you know what, those guys are people too".

I'm probably going to end up writing a huge post about this in my lj so this conversation has been helpful. Have a good day!

It would, you're right. I think Stark symbolizes a lot of cocky Americanness, part of which is that you never think about the people "over there" as actual people until you have to deal with it yourself.

Hi again! Yes, you're right, and I don't have a problem with the movie doing that per se. There was an enormous potential there for character development and only some it was used. I think that's because there were two sets of writers. They both had their own vision and ideas that unfortunately weren't combined as well as they could have been.

I've found this to be true of people in general, regardless of where they're from, and it's why I liked Stark's realisation that his weapons could be used against himself and his country. I just wish they'd taken it further.

Well, there's a good chance they'll be making a second movie, so possibly they can go into that. I agree, though, that the second act only hinted at the fact that Tony Stark is still doing the same thing as he was before--making superweapons. It's just that now he's taking it into his own hands and making sure that they're being used "right" instead of handing them out to whoever has cash and looks fairly legit. They didn't really make it obvious or have anyone comment on it.

One of the things I liked about Iron Man was that even after his Startling Loss and Sudden Revelation he was still an egotistical jerk with a distinct lack of respect for other people. It's just that now his egotism spans from the fact that he's a hero instead of the fact that he's making gobs of money and sleeping with lots of women. I mean, even the final scene was less taking responsibility for his actions and more "Look! See how awesome I am! My awesome shall not be anonymous!"

Yes, exactly! And the first act was more 'realistic' (gunmen hiding in caves, etc) while the second was more cartoon-like. It was fun seeing Jeff Bridges as a super-robot but it added to the problems we've discussed. I do have to say that I liked the reporter and how she was happy to continue challenging him. It's a pity she didn't play a larger role.

LOL! Trufax :D He's such an attention whore. And I agree with you completely, it was really good to see that his personality remained the same. RDJ really brought the lolz, too. It will be interesting to see where they go with the second movie.

I can't remember where the exact scans had gone off to, but the suit captured Tony and tied him up without food or water for a few days and kept demanding that Tony take him back. Tony, I think, was partially amused.
