142 I'm going to say it: I hate anon fic memes, especially anon kink memes. It fills fandoms with nothing but short heavy kink crackfic and that isn't really what I want to read, never mind that it never seems to have anything to do with the actual characters, but is more "insert names into pre-existing scenario". I wish you could have a meme for like, kissfic or something.

177 Joss appears to be an on or off sort of guy. He either hits sweet spots you didn't even know you possessed, or he's like nails on a chalkboard. (For me, it's the latter. I find him talented but a little too in love with himself, and therefore he's getting repetitive.)

180 Um, is this also true for shows where the "hero" is a woman, like Buffy or Veronica Mars or Gilmore Girls? Or are you just a misogynist who thinks that all female characters that have agency are by definition sues? Either you're a troll, a misogynist, or you are narrow in your canon selections. The people I know who "just don't like" most female characters "just like" canons that are very male oriented, where the female characters are an afterthought or an obvious love interest. But there are plenty that aren't.

That's why I don't like him. I actually met him and while he was very very nice, he was just a little bit too into himself.

Not surprising when so many fangirls worship the ground he walks on.

I've only been involved on one kinkmeme, so perhaps the one I know does it differently from other kinkmemes, but in the case of the one I know...it's one community. So it's not "filling" fandom. And while some of the fics on the comm DO end up being "insert names here" fics, quite a few are in character and moving as well as hot. Good authors do not suddenly become shitty authors because they're filling anon prompts.

Besides that, anon fic memes give new authors a chance to post something without risk and see the reaction. In a big fandom, that's a boon for shy/under-confident authors who might actually have real talent.

Dunno - maybe the kinkmemes you've seen ARE different; but since the one I know seems like it's provided some people with a chance to try something they've never done before (i.e. post fic) while also producing much porn for greater justice, it struck me as unfair to completely write them off.

That might be how it goes in a large fandom where there are a lot of fics being written. In a smaller fandom—I'm thinking of American Idol fandom here, where there are probably 2-3 active ship comms and the main comm and that's it—the kink memes (there were three over the course of five or so months I think) filled up the fandom. First, because a lot of the fic doesn't get posted anonymously on the meme but is posted as a story on the main comm,

idolslash. Second, because suddenly for pairings that didn't have that much fic to begin with, the fic that is around is heavy kink, and IME with both Idolslash and Avatar kink memes most of that kink is BDSM oriented. There was suddenly a lot of Jason Castro's pretty, pretty tears when there hadn't been that much Castro fic already. Third, to write it anon you have to fit it into one, maybe two comments, and I don't know how well any writer can do character work and a heavy kink in ficlet length. I haven't seen it done—the good fics that I've seen come out are usually not anon and posted someplace else.

I can see what you're saying about its good points, but I still wish there were more anon memes that weren't just about kink porn, especially since so much of the kink in fandom centers around power and consent issues. Even vanilla porn would be a refreshing change, but how about something PG or R? We talk about how we don't just want porn, and then we have these huge anon memes that are all about getting the kinkiest, nastiest sex in as few words as possible. Several of those in a small fandom, and all you get is kinky sex—it really swings the balance, not only of what people are writing, but the fandom's sense of what people want, such that kinky sex begets kinky sex.

Oh, I see. That does sound like it sucks.

Still, you know, I was thinking today that a kissfic meme actually sounds like a neat idea. Maybe you should start one?
