I will say that I think that if people shipping politicians makes it a fandom, then someone shipping sociologists (? I don't know who those people are) should make it a fandom. [I will also say that the redundancies in my original not!secret comment are pretty repetitive... -_-;]

Politicians are famous public figures, though, and the election drama is basically a giant, important reality show--with new episodes every day or even every hour during the campaign season instead of just every week. It's no different than writing RPF about actors or musicians or any other celebrity, except in politics the stakes are higher. (I think politicians are waayyy more interesting than actors.)

My decision's been made for over a year now.* Now I'm a campaign volunteer. Same with the '04 election cycle: I enjoy the gossip and the fic and the smut while simultaneously working the phones and posting relatively serious things on DailyKos and Democratic Underground and other sites under another name.
*actually my decision's been made for decades. I have a consistent ideological position and vote for the candidate who most closely resembles it, which is pretty much always the Democratic one, and has been since my first Presidential election, the '88 one.
