I'm currently plotting out a story that has two characters as the protagonists, and I'm enjoying it so much better than if it was a straight romance. I'm not going to lie, I would love them to have fall in love, but since I set a clear boundary for myself that it'd never happen, I'm managing to develop their relationship in different, fuller ways.

Someone, possibly even from here, said that a good romance has characters with full and interesting character motivations of their own while bad romances have characters that are only written to fall in love with each other so it comes off more shallow. So that's why I've been holding off on having a romance in my story, and I think it's helped me out a lot. Both sides of the "I want them to stay single" and "I want them to be together" argument can have their cake too. ;)
