Buchanan is his middle name. James Buchanan Barnes. He could have just as easily been a Jimmy, a Jamie, or a Barney. It's a name rife with possible nicknames.

I find it odd that anyone would feel the need to spontaneously explain their name. It's just the group of syllables that someone prefers to be called, and it could almost be anything regardless of time period. It's like someone explaining their hair color as they're introducing themselves to you.
