while I can't say I've ever heard/had THAT take, I do agree the message of the song is pretty crap. It's the juxtaposition of "you don't know you're beautiful / that's what makes you beautiful" that rubs me the wrong way - surely it'd be kinder to build up her confidence with her and HELP her know she's beautiful, rather than encourage that self-hating mentality out of some "not like other girls" "girls who know they're pretty aren't actually pretty" mentality? It's not negging or anything in an explicit sense, but it's always felt in that ballpark, a kind of backhanded compliment - "your lack of self worth makes you beautiful".

Again, can't say I've ever had or heard your specific interpretation.
