It is in book 3 of the series, Children of Dune. The miniseries adapted books 2 and 3. Leto does it to save the universe, basically. He's got his father's gift for seeing the future, and he sees that there is only one path that will stop the total destruction of everything. The turning into the worm is 1. so he can live a long time and 2. so he can return the worms to Arrakis once they've died out.

How extremely weird. I really enjoyed the very first Dune book, but the later books not so much, and never did read the whole series.

Dune is far and away the best, but I did enjoy 2-4 as well. 5-6 are weird in not a good way and also really confusing.

Jeez, i dind't even know a six existed. I might have to read Dune over again and then, possibly, brave another one or two...we shall see.

I also highly recommend the Dune Encyclopedia (I've got an ecopy if you want, since it is out of print). It is written as if it is an encyclopedia written in the distant future of the Dune universe, so different articles have different POVs. It makes some of the more confusing stuff in the universe more understandable. And it is a fun read.

Hrmmmmmm.
What sort of ecopy? I don't have a kindle or whatever, it would have to be a .doc or .pdf or something.....

Aw, I loved books five and six a lot, too! Miles Teg was such an interesting character!
