Some pretty ugly shit goes down here in f!s sometimes - which is partly why I hang around. People who are hurting need to hear a kind word in between all the ignorant victim-blaming, mockery, and general nastiness.

But do you think maybe there's a difference between a comm which contains a mixture of lulz, craziness, squee, serious discussion, and mean-spirited mockery - and a comm devoted to nothing but mean-spirited mockery? (At least peeps have a chance to defend themselves here.)

(As always, anon assholes, I delete LJ's notifications of your comments unread, so don't waste your time. Apologies if you're anon and not an asshole - I'm just tired of wasting my time.)

Yeah. I haven't seen or heard about F!S ganging together to make fun of people for having mental health problems, or deliberately attacking people they knew were suicidal at the time. Maybe I just haven't been around F!S for long enough... then again, I haven't read F_W for a good couple of years because the nastiness was so extreme, and have still heard about some of the shit that's gone on via my friends list, so I'm inclined to think that F!Sers really are a generally nicer bunch.

And even mockery can be done in a way that's not so nasty.

stupid_free manages to maintain a more pleasant atmosphere than F_W, although possibly not if you leap in to disagree with them.

I wonder about the role of incestuous amplification (http://www.cybercollege.com/ia.htm) in f_w. Nobody can join or post anonymously, so it's the same bunch of people talking to themselves - egging each other on, convincing themselves that this is how normal people behave. I don't think they realise how they look to fans who don't get their daily jollies by making fun of peeps who can't even defend themselves. Here in f!s there are a variety of topics and attitudes and anybody can stick their oar in, making the comm much less in danger of disappearing up its own backside. :-)

Plus when people are made fun of on F!S, it's because of a secret they made and submitted of their own free will, and unless they choose to comment under their own name, in most cases the secrets will remain anonymous. Not that that means there won't be nastiness in comments, or random nastiness towards people commenting, but by submitting a secret you are at least inviting a response (and probably have a fair idea beforehand that people are going to call you a loser, with some secrets).

Of course the anon commenting does allow people to take their grudges out on anyone who comments here, but it's still not the same as actively searching the internet for someone's latest contribution to a community so you can get a group of people to make fun of them for it.

Actually, they turned off anonymous posting due to trolling or underage posters coming in. I can't remember what the recent reason was for. And jf actually has account creation turned on so YES people can come in and defend themselves.
