Yeah, exactly. In any other movie this character would be the hero. He and his team were in the casino, getting their James Bond on as well. But he wound up having to be saved, helped, taught, etc by pretty much every character they came across.

It makes sense and not just because '(not so) ordinary guy in extraordinary circumstances' is Freeman's thing. But they had 2 white characters, one of them a villain and the other well-meaning but clueless comic relief. Considering how many movies have been exclusively white except for one or both of those roles, it's fitting IMO.
