As people have said, so long as you don't believe what you read in rpf is real or try to have anyone involved read it, you're fine.

I read some rpf, and when I do, I'm not really relating it to the actual real-world people. It's easy to separate them. The characters are fictionalised versions, who look and sound the same, come from a similar context (similar because we don't really know a lot about athletes/musicians/actors - we're constructing a persona based on the little that we do see, and that persona is likely miles away from who the person truly is), and who I can apply my existing emotional regard to.

That last part is important, and is why people don't just change the names and write original characters. Fanfic as a genre - be it rpf or otherwise - relies on existing knowledge and emotional responses. Suggesting people remove the fanfic element from their rpf is missing the point of fandom entirely.
