I disliked the live-action film because Belle and the Beast and Mrs. Potts were autotuned to death. Most of the costumes were boring, not just Belle’s, although her ballgown was especially lackluster, and the lack of a corset meant jack squat since it wasn’t mentioned onscreen anywhere and she was definitely wearing foundation garments of some sort. I thought the animators did an especially wooden job on the Beast’s face, and the magic travelling mirror (and Belle’s backstory) was handled poorly. And I felt like I was watching Hermione cosplaying as Belle; Watson’s affect and mannerisms just seemed too similar.

I actually liked that Belle was an inventor and assumed that her father was, also. Yeah, he painted, but making music boxes is hard, intricate work. Luckily, I didn’t go looking for Watson’s views on the feminism of Disney Princesses, although I loved Belle trying to teach another girl to read. I didn’t feel like her Belle was a Sue, or any more “special” than animated Belle, just kind of wooden.
