I was honestly uncomfortable with her costume choices, which is weird in one day because she's not flashing a lot of skin. But, dammit... she's evoking an established mode of dress, here. And by those standards, hiking up your skirt to show your legs and pantaloons - all the time, not just to get across a river or something - has a very specific social meaning. Which I don't think the film-makers intended but there it is.

And why are her pockets on the outside?? Wearing them doesn't make her clever, and they're not an extra required by her tool use. *Every* woman of that class wears tie-on pockets for everyday equipment, because every woman of that class has *things to do* with her day. They're just worn discreetly under the skirt and reached by slits in the side. As it is, Belle has what's clearly underwear showing, as she runs around flashing her legs...

Which leads me to feel that the town's discomfort with her is less to do with reading and tool use, and more to do with dressing like a goddamn weirdo.

Which I don't think is the film-makers intention, but there it is.
