I haven't read the EU do I can't comment on that. It had pluses and minuses for me. Overall, the reveal of Chewie as a "beast" was interesting but it raises a ton of questions (the Empire just lugs him around from campaign to campaign? why is Chewie this beast and not a slave? how come Han hadn't seen him before?). I also would have rather Han learned Wookiee from Chewie, rather than already knowing it.

I did see a commentator who noted that this might not actually be the thing that Han gets the life-debt for - that it might be a later adventure like if Han helps Chewie free his wife and son. If so, then it's nice if the life-debt happens after Han and Chewie were already friends. Of course, that's total head-canon but I like it. And, so far in the film, they haven't mentioned the life-debt so it is nice to see Chewie decide to be with Han just because he wants to and not for a life-debt.
