At what point does an individual bear moral responsibility for doing things like EG joining the Nazis or bullying pre-teen students?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's not saying he's not responsible, it's saying both had very different lives that lead to who they were.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
If it doesn't change the fact that he's responsible for joining the Wizard Nazis, what is the relevance of bringing it up as a reply to that?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Do I have to repeat myself?

Both had entirely different lives. James had his entire life handed to him on a silver platter. Someone like Snape is more likely to fall into a cult looking for a place to fit in than someone who's rich and popular.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
But it's not an excuse for joining the Wizard Nazis, so why are you treating it like one?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I’m not? I’m pointing out the difference between James and Snape.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of differences between them! The question is, what's the relevance of those differences

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
The relevance has already been pointed out to you.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I'm just baffled this thread devolved from "was what James did wrong?" to "was Snape a terrible person?"

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Because if Snape was terrible it means they can justify his abuse.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
If that's true that's... not good.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
That is always what this argument is actually about

100% of the time

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I must have missed it - do you mind repeating it? The only things that we've established, as far as I can tell, are:

1) Snape was bullied and lonely and didn't have a support network
2) Snape chose to join the Wizard Nazis, unlike other people, and is morally responsible for that choice

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
You’re saying James ‘outgrew’ what he was compared to Snape as if both were in the exact same situations. Which is false. Get it?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
People with shitty lives who did not join a nazi cult: Remus Lupin, Rubeus Hagrid, Neville Longbottom, Albus Dumbledore (bonus, he dated a nazi and still did not join a cult), etc, etc. Also the Malfoys and Blacks seem to be extremely well-off and well-connected and are still shitty people who fell in with a cult so that's not really a great indicator of who ends up where.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Most if not all of those examples had a positive support network that Snape did not.

Also Dumbledore actually shared more Nazi-like beliefs than Snape did.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the man who was discriminated against for something he had no control in, the man who was orphaned as a child and falsely accused/expelled at 13, and the boy whose parents were driven so insane by torture they didn't recognize him had GREAT support networks.

Also I'm not denying Dumbledore was also a dick but he definitely didn't join up with the nazis.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-23 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Lupin had the Marauders who went out of their way to make him feel accepted to the point they became animaguses for him. Neville had Harry and co. who constantly stood by him. And idk about Hagrid’s peers but he at least had a good father whereas Snape did not.
