Well, first of all, it's GRRM's decision, not the showrunners.

Second, I... really don't see how Dany ending up on the Iron Throne would be appropriate to the story or characters? I'm not saying that Jon necessarily would either, although I can kind of see the argument for him - but what's the case for Danaerys?

(I wasn't criticizing - I've not read the books and I gave up on the show after S4 -- but considering it is the Song of Ice AND Fire and not Ice OR Fire, I've always assumed that at some point opposites are meant to unite. (Or has that already happened?)

In a male-dominated society like Westeros? Never would happen. If they were married, he would be King, and she'd be queen in the same sense Cersei was queen.

I would agree but most of the characters with the most power right now are women. Cersei, Dany, and Sansa. I love Jon and all but somehow it feels wrong that all these ladies struggled for power because they actually wanted it and Jon who never wanted to be a leader (was just kinda pushed in leadership positions every time) will get it by default.

Yeah, it's realistic but kinda off putting. However I don't think the Iron Throne is what really matters anyways. I hope it's destroyed and the ending is something nobody expected.

Well, Dany's ultimate goal is the Iron Throne, it'd be difficult to resolve her arc in a satisfying way without her capturing it eventually. At least, not without a few more seasons and a LOT of character growth on her part. Right now she thinks she's god's gift to the world, and she hasn't yet learned that she isn't just entitled to waltz in a command respect.

But, I don't want her OR Jon to get it. Dany's a hot mess when it comes to ruling, particularly in the last few seasons. It's been a whole lot of telling the audience how wonderful she is, while showing her to be an awful destructive tyrant like the rest of her family. And while Jon's a lot more grounded and much more able to see the big picture than Dany, he's also a fairly incompetent leader and really struggles when he's faced with difficult choices.
