I thought Lord of the Rings did a great job of making places look lived in (with a touch of magic and beautiful lighting for the Elven places) but unfortunately The Hobbit relied too much on CGI and almost everything looked polished and fake.

IMO, LOTR wasn't perfect, but it did a better job of that than the Hobbit films. Everything just seemed... off. Like you said, polished and fake.

I thought the same thing. Look at how they hung Bilbo's waistcoat with rocks in the pockets to make them look stretched out and used. Look at how there were ruins scattered around the landscape.

If Rivendell is elven and made out if wood, I question how old it should look, anyway. That indoor/outdoor thing is going to result if bits needing to be replaced.

Let us not speak of The Hobbit. After years of hoping it'd be A Movie, the fight to get it made and what actually came of it (A TRILOGY?? WITH PJ, WHO DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO DIRECT IT??) was not even worth it. Losing Guillermo Del Toro was a tragedy.
