How does RPing work?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about getting into it, I even visited one of the comms here (bakerstreet) but...i don't get it entirely.

Where does the interaction take place?
Do I have to be a canon character? what if I want to make my own/someone has already chosen the character I want? (I do believe rules may apply depending on the board?)

Does anyone know of a primer for newbies, or care to share your Doing histiry/experience? Thank you!!!

bakerstreet is a meme comm, but it's hard to get traction there unless you're playing from a really popular fad canon. people post up memes, you comment in the post, reply, profit. you can play literally anything you want including OCs, but there is a general etiquette that can trip people up, unwritten "rules" (e.g. not using tumblr headcanons to build a character) that take some getting used to. it's pretty freeform otherwise, and nobody cares how many Tony Starks post into a meme.

games, well. if you app into a game you've got multiple comms for the rp, usually a network (for social media spamming each other) and logs comm (for face to face prose-ish interaction). games have rules which are clearly posted so you can know what is allowed, how to join, what to expect, etc. that's the only time you'll run into someone already playing a character you'd like to play, if the game says no multiples of characters allowed. most have that rule.

https://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/26116.html is the RPanons resources, there's a guide to dwrp for tumblr users which is pretty good, a little outdated in places but mostly helpful. and some other resources as well.

Where does the interaction take place?

That depends. It could be on communities or even the journal themselves. Sometimes people set their own private RPs or museboxes where they RP with other people to practice their writing or just having fun.

Do I have to be a canon character?

Not necessarily, though it depends on the place. Some places are welcoming of OCs while other you might not get the replies you want. If you're not sure you can always stick to canon or test the waters with a friend or someone you know to practice with some OCs.

what if I want to make my own/someone has already chosen the character I want? (I do believe rules may apply depending on the board?)

If you want to make your own character then check the community rules. Some accept them while others usually stick to canon-only characters. Usually when a character is taken in a comm they don't really accept duplicates as to avoid confusion.

AFAIK most RP has moved to insanejournal since they offer 100 icons for free BUT you need an invite. There are communities where people give out invite codes or if you know someone who has an account there and has a code to spare then you can ask. Tumblr has some RP too, but I haven't checked much/I'm not super active there.

Personally I RP sometimes at anonmemes for giggles and it's fun. Used to RP back in the day with a friend and haven't done much since then even if I'm itching (and also my main RP is anime/manga so that's a bit harder to find this days).
