I once cut down a stretch of six-foot tall wood fence with a handsaw, at 1:00am, while wearing my nightgown. In the morning when it was light out I realized I’d also sawed through a bunch of nails.

But why?

Destroyer of fences here—My mom was drunk and got stuck and almost impaled on a broken fence post sneaking back from the liquor store. She’d gone out through a gap in the fence between ours and the neighbor’s yards because our back gate creaked really really loudly, and she didn’t want me to catch her going on a booze run at 1:00 in the fucking morning. Then she tripped and fell and broke a board half off the fence. Her panic attack woke me up; the broken board was digging into her stomach.

The neighbors never said anything, just nailed an old gate over the gap. They knew mom was a drunk but I’m not sure they ever figured out what happened there, and never said anything to me. I can laugh about it now... the next day, at my earliest class, the professor asked me if something was wrong because I couldn’t concentrate for shit. I told her and got goggle-eyed silence followed by an offer to do whatever at my desk until class was over.

I was stung by a bee or wasp within the same minute my twin sister was stung several yards away, in a gymnasium nowhere close to an obvious bee site and with no open windows. I remember the counsellors and my dad not seeming to take it entirely seriously and I've wondered if they thought one of us was faking or something.

My mother emigrated to another country with my sister when I was 15, but under the pretense of scoping out a place for us to live permanently. We got a letter the day she was due back basically saying "you're on your own now, bye lol" to my dad, leaving him to look after me and my brother, with no money because she'd cleaned him out in the process. Then we found out from various men via e-mails that she'd created a whole catalogue of fake identities and life stories for them, none of which involved her having a family.

It was weird. Never heard from her again.

What the fuuuuck. I mean, no offense but it sounds like you're better off without her, but what the fuuuuuck. I'm sorry that happened to you guys.

Haha, no offense taken! It was a good thing with hindsight. She basically isolated the entire family (she homeschooled us and didn't allow us out of the house alone ever), so after she left, my dad borrowed and scraped enough cash for us to go to college and finally make friends, experience the world, etc.

There's a bunch of weird shit that we found on her computer after she left, like lingerie photoshoot stuff that had apparently been taken by god knows who in our garden, and she was wearing my stuff. Some of it beggars belief.

NAYRT—holy shit; that was awful of her, I’m sorry. Do you know what happened to your sister, or was she like your mom? Also the lingerie photoshoot in your clothes thing makes my skin not so much crawl as shrug itself off and go hide under my bed. Eeesh.
