Mai is awesome and doesn't get nearly enough love from the fandom.

I really liked her and Zuko/Mai as well, idk I just thought they worked well together in all their emoness/ :P

Also I just generally thought her dagger throwing was cool(I think it was daggers? It's been a while so I can't remember).

i like that she's not conventionally attractive, has a big nose and long face. i also liked that she didn't need to have an upbeat/bubbly ~beautiful~ personality for zuko to be interested in her. she was allowed to be sort of quiet and dark which you don't see too often in female characters.

She was boring and bland and it doesn't help that a minor character ended up dating one of the mains. It feels... weird, Zuko deserved someone more fleshed out. But Bryke are terrible at romance.

90% of the people who hated her probably were just bitter she sunk their Zuko/Katara ship and didn't actually hate any actual aspect of her. I don't actively ship them or anything, but Mai's great, and while Zuko mildly annoys me his story arc was so amazing I can't hate. They're interesting together. :)

People hate her? I really liked her, although reading some of the comments to this secret I guess I can see why some would dislike her or even hate her.

She's not terrible but she's SUCH a one-note character. Lethargic girlfriend. She was good for giving Zutarans twisted ovaries but she's pretty lame.

Basically this. Didn't hate her when watching it and don't give a flying fuck about Zutara but she's just criminally boring as a character and more of a trope given a face.

Mai has the problem of being dull as fuck and selfish to an extreme. Usually the people who like her extend her character (what we saw onscreen was basically a one dimensional goth chic), which does often make her much more attractive, but the show doesn't really give us much.

I do think a lot of the general hate towards her is due to shipping, if I am honest.

I like her as a character, but Mai/Zuko doesn't really float my boat. I just don't think they really work together.

I don't know why, but she always makes me think of Daria so I can't dislike her.
