I know the counter-arguments to OP, but I still tend to agree. Definitely not a politically correct thing to say out loud about privileged people, nor the dead.

All I can say is that the debate doesn't matter. Suicide isn't going anyplace no matter where you stand on this issue. What matters is letting people in the now know that they can, in fact, heal from suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts. Also what resources and people are available for them. Rich or poor, the goal should be to save as many of them as possible.

It's one thing to say it's a shame and that the injustice of the whole situation frustrates you. It's another to blame a depressed person for committing suicide and talk about it like it was their rational, free-willed, clear-eyed decision to kill themselves.

The former I think most people would agree with. The latter being just factually wrong, has nothing to do with political correctness.

There's plenty of people who passionately argue that suicide is selfish as you argue that a person can't always help themselves from it.
Nothing is going to change about that.

Although I agree that suicide is rather unjust in that someone with the resources and money can't always be saved, and that is rather frustrating and unfair.

I never said anything about selfishness or unselfishness, though? I'm saying that depression is a disorder and depressed people who commit suicide are not making rational, clear-eyed decisions about that. To act as though they are purposely making irrational decisions or be angry that they aren't thinking rationally, is kind of pointless and silly.

Something can be both selfish, and something you can't help doing. It's not either-or. Not that I would call suicide necessarily selfish. Just that what you bring up is not a real counterpoint.

I never said you did, but it falls in line with the same thought process as OP.

Not all people who commit suicide are depressed. Not all depressed people are incapable of rational decision-making. Depression is not a death sentence.
And you're right, suicide isn't necessarily an either-or situation but the debate on motive is altogether fruitless.

I never said I had a counterpoint for you, and I already know yours. I don't want to debate because this is about opinions, which frankly don't matter when it comes to helping suicidal people.

In the two cases mentioned, it was about depression, hence the discussion of depression. And I didn't claim depressed people are completely incapable of logic in all aspects. But yes, I see this thread going nowhere.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-30 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think you tried to shape the discussion by bringing up people who committed suicide out of depression.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-30 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's specifically who the secret was about in the first place; opening up the discussion to suicide in general was the weird attempt to reshape the conversation

(Anonymous) 2018-06-30 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Because people like secret OP are pissed off about people with money and connections apparently not getting adequate help, not necessarily those who commit suicide out of depression.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-30 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The people OP is butthurt about committed suicide out of depression. You cannot yank the depression out of the conversation, trying to do so is bullshit goalpost moving.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-30 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Pointing out that OP's gripe is about the rich (notice they said nothing about the average depressed person committing suicide) isn't moving the goalpost at all.
