OP
(Anonymous) 2018-06-30 07:26 am (UTC)(link)Mainly, my point was that everyone was suffering in the Shimmer in that film (just as everyone suffers within a real world cult) and that the ambiguity of the bear's motivations and state of being related to the ambiguity I have been grappling with about my ex who raped me on the command of the cult. Before it happened we were very happy, but they had programmed a darkness within him I was unaware of. We were the two closest people together in the world and yet they were able to force him to destroy it all because they "had other plans for me", which I shudder to think could have been had I been unable to escape, because they likely threatened to kill us if he didn't.
They way the characters talk about the bear in the film, how it was as if their comrade Cass had been absorbed into the bear's madness that moved me to uncontrollable tears. The misery of the bear's existence made think about the misery my ex must be in as he is still in the cult (I escaped) and how those people have that level of control over him that they can compel him to hurt someone who genuinely loved him. I know that I was the most important person in the world to him.
The bear in the film is a dangerous predator, but it is also obviously in suicidal pain. It is tormented by the memory of its victim who has fused with it at a genetic level. It screams with her own dying wails that must echo in its mind, just as I think for me ex he must live with the memories of what he did to me.
It's just tragic the situation, being in a cult is like being in the Shimmer, your sense of reality is completely warped and you are constantly in danger. The film also has a theme of lost love with Natalie Portman's character essentially trying to redeem and save her love interest as her main motivation. It's a very beautiful film and the concepts of grief and confusion and spirituality it delves into are very relevant to those living in cults that control your existence and state of mind.
