Setting aside the characters created for the series, I felt that Spader's Jackson was fine--his bit correcting the translation on the blackboard is probably my favorite part of the movie--and the actress that played Catherine was delightful, but that's it.

Russell came across as a humorless robot who didn't want to be there (shades of Donald Sutherland in the original Buffy movie). Now, I realize that it's not fair to compare a movie portrayal to a series, but as I recall from the start RDA played O'Neil with a lot more humor.

And while I concede that Jaye looked nifty in most of the costumes, his delivery and body language just... did not work for me. After so many millennia terrorizing the Abydonians, you'd think he'd come across as a wee more arrogant. And yes, I guess he did suffer by comparison with Peter Williams, who served up such regal contemptuousness as Apophis.

(Late 90s Jaye would have made a splendid Dionysis, though, right?)

DA, but considering that movie O'Neil starts out depressed and suicidal over the death of his son, it would have been kind of awkward for Russell to be yukking it up. YMMV, of course.

SG1 O'Neill has a purpose in life though. Movie-version was iirc just kinda sitting around with nothing to do but focus on his depression all day till he was yanked back into action. SG1 version is rebuilding his life and finding new stuff/people to care about. We do see that he has some lingering issues and grief (as who wouldn't) but he's moving forward with his life, so it makes sense that the drive and sass would be returning.
