What to look for in a car

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-07-01 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So we're finally close to having enough money saved up for me to get a decent car. I've never bought a car before, though, so I'm not sure what to look for. Obviously, I want a safe car, and good mileage would be nice. But other than that, I have no ideas.

Does anyone have any thoughts? What brands are good? What features are important and what don't matter so much? What do I look for in an advertisement for a used car?

Honda. Get a Honda Accord or Civic. They last forever.

Even a good car will only last as long as you take care of it. And even then, parts wear out after a while and must be replaced.

....yes? That is true with literally everything.

The only car anyone should get is the Kia Soul.

- go for a model and company that's popular where you live because it will be cheaper and easier to source replacement parts down the line
- do a debt search (if you can in your country) on the VIN before you purchase privately
- match the VIN, not the license number, to the paperwork
- ask to see the service logbook (do you even have those?) or a record of the last thorough workup the car had
- don't sign without an independent mechanical check
- budget for insurance (sometimes you pay more for an older model) and mileage (again, older models can be more expensive to run)
- ask if it's current under registration/insurance/anything you would need a car to be serviceable in order to have
- depending on laws where you live, you might be better off going through a dealer or company used for the legal protections/warranty/checks already in place

I can give you a few easier things to look at yourself, but that's not the full picture. There's only so much you can tell about a car without pulling it apart. Big, expensive issues can be silent, and sometimes people sell when they find out about one because they know the car will run fine for a period of time before it's noticeable to the driver.

real thoughts: safety is good, gas mileage is good, but when it comes to features what matters differs from person to person. are you going to do a lot of long-haul driving, or merely short trips around town? do you need cargo space for road trips or is that less important? is bluetooth phone sync and all kinds of technology actually important or are you the kind of person who would just get distracted by all of it? With used cars,
definitely aim for a car with low mileage (the closer to 100k miles already on it, the more wear and tear it's had), few/no accident claims or major repairs, and a younger age. So far all my used cars have lived over 12-13 years, I run them into the ground, so if you plan to just keep it until it blows a gasket, "resale value" is pointless. You may not find cars less than five years old for a low enough cost, but around 5-7 years old is pretty good, especially if it still has under 75k miles on it.

when I had to get my used cars it was 1000% the price and not features that mattered to me, followed by color and brand. I prefer foreign cars to domestic, Toyota first followed by Honda, Mitsubishi, and Kia, because they have the best reviews and the longest history of not sucking. If you have a larger window of price and can afford to be picky, then it might come down to features, cargo space, etc. Like, the last time I bought a car I absolutely was fine with getting a Kia that had manual windows and door locks because it was in my price range, and that fucker is still going at 13 years old.

I'm very happy with my Toyota Yaris, still going strong 12 years on (although for many of those years, I wasn't putting a lot of miles on it, so I don't know how Yarises with more miles compare.) My old car had more trunk space and I thought I would miss it, but I don't. I appreciate the mostly-plastic exterior, living as I do in Wisconsin where they salt the roads in winter. It has no visible rust, while my old car was getting seriously rusty by that age since I couldn't afford to wash it all tgge time.

If you mostly want it for commuting around town, Toyota Yaris. They're small, relatively cheap, good mileage and reliable. Do the proper maintenance on a Toyota, and you can drive it a good 10+ years. Check on Consumer Reports' annual car reviews and pay attention to reliability ratings.

Echoing the Honda sentiment. I had a Honda Civic for 14 years, and I would still probably have it if I didn't total it. But I walked away with no injuries in that crash. I now drive a Honda Fit and I love it. Hondas are great.
