I haven't seen the LA version, but if she played Belle-as-Hermione, I can very much see how it'd go wrong :/

I don't think it was quite Belle-as-Hermione. It was Belle-as-Emma. No one would ever accuse her of being a character actress and everyone else was giving these big, theater-like performances and she's so low-key and dull next to them, it was actually kind of jarring. Emma can only really play some version of herself.

Emma Watson is a TERRIBLE ACTRESS. I've seen multiple movies with her now, and while she's not quite as bad as Kristen Stewart, damn she comes close. She always has the same vaguely glaring look on her face. It's all variations of that one look.

I wish Hollywood would stop casting her. At least until she goes to school and learns what the hell she's doing.

This entire comment made me laugh out loud lmao

I prefer the animated, because it's the better of the two IMO. The singing is better, and I thought the additional song(s) didn't add anything. The best thing about the live action version was Gaston - he almost ran away with the show.

That being said, way back when I first watched the animated version, I did think that Belle was smug and full of herself. In that respect, I thought both the animated and live action are on par.

The singing was definitely better in the animated version, but I didn't care for Luke Evans' Gaston at all.

he almost ran away with the show.

Almost? He was the only reason I stayed sitting in the theater.

She can't sing to save her life, either

Casting her was a terrible mistake. She was easily the worst part of the movie. Not only because of her lifeless performance but because she pushed the costume designer to make the horrid yellow monstrosity.

I could've forgiven the yellow abomination if she could sing. But she can't, so I won't.

Haha. I wouldn't have forgiven the dress anyway, but the lack of singing and acting ability really stung.

And Emma Watson seems like a perfectly lovely young woman. But jesus she only plays "herself".

Anon who started this thread

Yep, pretty much everyone has pointed that out, that she can only play herself. Maybe she only cares to try to play herself but is capable of more. I actually thought her performance in the first Deathly Hallows movie was really solid.

I don't understand why they didn't just dub her! It was so obvious they used autotune for her when they didn't for anyone else. It was very jarring.

NAYRT—pfft, she was hardly the only autotuned monstrosity. Dan Stevens has a light tenor and they basically made him an entirely new voice; they didn’t just lower it an octave. And Emma Thompson was autotuned like whoa.

Same person as before

You're right. I guess I was just focused on Emma. It's not just that they autotuned her, it's that they autotuned her badly where she doesn't even sound like she's signing. She spoke the lyrics and they made it kind of sound like singing.

so many bitter betties in this thread

also i'm tired of every socially awkward character being armchair diagnosed as on the spectrum. some people are just awkward.
