Anyone have any recs for media featuring Egyptian gods? Primrily looking for books or comics, but I'm flexible.

Thanks for the recs. I might give the Anubis Gates a whirl, it's not really what I had in mind (It doesn't seem to feature the gods very much) but it sounds pretty cool. Time travel and wizards. Pretty cool.

Sorry, probably gonna be giving Creatures of Light And Darkness a miss, tho. Too far removed from the mythology from the sound of it. I dig the sci-fi, but Thoth is the boss god? Set is Thoths child? Osiris in charge of Life? Naw, too much there to trigger my myth-geek side.

Man, why is this so hard? I have like 8 books about the Norse, I know there are DOZENS about the greeks, but the egyptians seems like all that is out there either very partially connected, or fucking ROMANCE books. Seriously did a google search and most of the synposis read somthing like "Plain teen girl meets dark stranger who takes her on an adventure in love..."

Jesus. What is it about egyptian mythology that lends itself so heavily to this crap?

That's fair, Creatures was more of a long shot than anything. I definitely do think Anubis Gates is a good shout though. I strongly recommend reading anything that Tim Powers has wrote actually, but only Anubis Gates has Egypt-y stuff.

Jesus. What is it about egyptian mythology that lends itself so heavily to this crap?

I think there's a couple different things? First, Egyptian gods are not really that familiar, compared to Norse or Greek/Roman gods. I think people would be a lot more likely to just write about mummies if they wanted to write about Egypt y stuff rather than gods.

Second, the Egyptian gods are *weird* in a way that more familiar pantheon aren't. They're all about, like, being weirdos in the desert, and eating hearts, and chopping off penises, and shit like that. It's just weirder than, like, Zeus. And it's also generally a lot more culturally distant - the Odyssey and Iliad, for instance, are really formative and familiar for Western culture in a way that Thoth really isn't.

And third, to the extent that we *are* familiar with the Egyptian pantheon, it's often through a specific lens / tradition of Western esotericism, hermeticism, and occultism which took up Egyptian religion in a magical sense. So that means that a lot of people who do write about it do so in a much weirder and more distant way, rather than just writing about the pantheon as a pantheon.

All that said, you might try looking more in the horror genre - I don't have any recs bc I'm not nearly as familiar with it as fantasy, but there might be some Lovecraft influenced Egypt stuff out there or something.
