I feel like a significant number of the Big Two comic book characters have been around the mulberry bush of trauma and death so often now that most of them need a nice long lie down in a plane of existence where the writers aren't allowed to touch them

Yeah, I’m not even big into comics but since lots of them have been around for decades at this point, and suffering=dramatic plots, there’s probably at least a few superhero therapists, or therapist superheroes, running around.

Trafalgar Law in One Piece.

I mean a lot of those poor pirates have some super shitty lives but his really takes the cake. Terminal illness, genocide, pile of corpses, psychotic break, losing more than just his family, and then failing in his one life goal, losing an arm, and needing Luffy to finish it for him. Guy just can't catch a break.

Kahran Ramsus from Xenogears.

Began life as an experiment, manipulated from his early years, called trash and discarded for someone better. It's said he had to kill a boy just to get a body of his own (so he's not exactly innocent...but desperate times, I guess), but even after that, he joined the military and rose through the ranks. And he was still being manipulated and used until he performed the one task that those in charge wanted him to do. And then he had an existential crisis and the ones in charge were still calling him trash.

And while we're at it, Fei Fong Wong. Subjected to experiments from the age of four thanks to the woman posing as his mother, experiments so painful they caused him to completely disassociate. He had four personalities by the time he was 18. While still a child, he was kidnapped by the spirit of a previous incarnation, who trained his destructive persona to be a killer capable of destroying whole cities. His father intervened and brought him to a village, where he lived as a normal citizen after losing his memory. Then his past incarnation came back and manipulated him into destroying that village by reawakening the destructive persona. Fei was also used as a tool to manipulate Ramsus.

Edit: Still on Xenogears, I'd also like to add Hammer and Rico Banderas. Demi-humans are basically treated like shit.

Also anyone who was turned into Wels, or had their brains fused with a machine.
