Wow, I must be incredibly naive in this area! I didn't even realize actual dollars were being exchanged on such commissions (yeah, maybe I live under a rock?). Aren't we not supposed to be profiting when we "steal" others' characters to create fanfic and fanart?

Not trolling. I'm not very involved with fandom, I stick to fic and blog sites, no tumblr. I guess it's like people who pirate stuff... you just hope you can do it without anyone noticing?

WTF are you smoking? Fanart has always been bought and sold. It's a major taker of booth-space at actual conventions. It's nothing like pirating.

Depends on where you live. In some countries, selling fanart at cons is strictly forbidden because of copyright laws.

Never been to a convention. I've seen art for sale online but it always appears to be endorsed by the franchise, so I figured they've worked out some kind of deal. Just seems wrong to me to make money off someone else's creation without their permission. But okay, I'm smoking something because I don't know this stuff.
